Whether you are just beginning or looking to relocate your business to Gorham, let's start the conversation. We encourage businesses to contact the Town of Gorham’s Economic Development Division.  This Division provides the best place to lay the foundations of your entrepreneurial dreams.   Our team is ready to provide guidance and assistance with all the steps to get to open!  Reach out at 207.222.1620.

  • Planning. Business planning, advice, and research before starting can set you on the right path to success. Many businesses choose to use an individual business consultant to assist in the business planning phase. But there are also free government and nonprofit organizations. See the attached file below for detailed information on services available to you.
  • Structure. If you have made the decision to incorporate your business, you will need to determine which business structure is best for you. Legal advice is recommended. The SBA offers guidance on different types of structures. Once you’ve chosen your business structure, you will need to file your papers with the Secretary of State’s office and register a trade name (if applicable).
  • Zoning. To learn the areas of town where you're permitted to operate your type of business you may contact the Planning Division directly at 207.222.1620 or visit our website for the Gorham Land Use and Development Code.
  • Location. In addition to working with area real estate brokers, the Town of Gorham Economic Development Office can assist with your search. You can reach us directly at: 207.222.1620
  • Permits. If you have narrowed down a business location and want to know what issues you need to consider before moving forward with a lease or purchase, our team is here to help. Contact our Economic Development office, 207.222.1620 for assistance customized to your business and location.
  • Licensing. Visit the State of Maine website to verify requirements for licensing your business.  For certain types of businesses, you will also need to register with the Town Clerk. You can call the Clerk at 207.222.1670 or visit the website to see if your business needs a local license.
  •  Employees. Visit the Maine Department of Labor website for information on hiring employees, unemployment insurance, wages and labor laws.
  • Funding. There are a myriad of options to obtain financing for your business once you have completed the steps above. These options include:
    • Banks and financial institutions – many local companies offer loan programs and incentives for new and existing businesses.
    • State of Maine Financial Resources
    • Revolving Loan Fund, Gorham Economic Development Corporation
    • Town of Gorham Economic Development Grants – call us for more information at 207.222.1620
