Assistant Code Enforcement Officer (Full Time)

We are currently accepting applications for the full-time (40 hours) position of Assistant Code Enforcement Officer. This is a technical and administrative position responsible for assisting the Code Enforcement Officer (CEO) with administration of the Town’s land use and development activities to ensure compliance with construction and zoning codes, ordinances, and other regulatory requirements. Reviews residential and commercial construction plans, issues permits, and inspects construction work, including buildings, septic systems, plumbing, and electrical connections. Interprets and enforces zoning and land use ordinances, educates the public, investigates and resolves complaints, and maintains accurate records. Provides staff support to the Board of Appeals in the absence of the CEO. The Assistant Code Enforcement Officer reports to the Director of Community Development. Work is performed independently with general guidance from the CEO and in collaboration with other Community Development Department staff. A complete job description is available HERE.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  High School diploma or equivalent required. Associates degree in Construction Technology, Building Trades, or related field preferred. Must have a minimum of three (3) years’ work experience in applicable construction trades, including plumbing and electrical, with the ability to obtain State of Maine Code Enforcement Officer Certification, State of Maine Licensed Plumbing Inspector (LPI) Certification, and Certification under Rule 80K within 12 months of employment (employer-paid). Any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.

An individual hired as “Assistant Code Enforcement Officer” will be eligible for promotion to “Code Enforcement Officer” 12 months after obtaining all required CEO certifications.  Candidates who already possess the required State of Maine Code Enforcement Officer certifications and meet all other requirements of the CEO position as outlined in the Code Enforcement Officer job description will considered for lateral hire into the higher level position.  

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:  The Town of Gorham offers a comprehensive package of pay, benefits, and paid time off to eligible employees, including a choice between two excellent health insurance plans with a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA), a 457(b) deferred compensation retirement plan with a 7.5% employer match, earned vacation and sick time, and 12 paid holidays per year. Hourly pay range for the Assistant Code Enforcement Officer (Grade 5) begins at $25.77 per hour. Annual salary range for the Code Enforcement Officer (Grade 6) begins at $58,812. Pay and job title will depend on experience and qualifications.
