The Accessible Voting System will be available for use at the polls for the upcoming Election. This system is designed for the benefit of voters with sight or mobility impairments and will enable them to cast their ballots independently. Voters will not be required to use this system and can still have assistance from another person if they prefer it. The Accessible Voting System is basically a telephone and a fax machine. Voters listen to the ballot being read to them over the telephone and will indicate their choice by using the buttons on the telephone. The voted ballot
is reviewed for the voter over the telephone and then the ballot is faxed to the voter at the polling place as they wait. The voter will deposit the ballot into the ballot box to be manually counted at the close of the polls.
The Secretary of State's office has set up a toll free number that you can call from home for a practice session with this system. The Preview & Practice Toll Free Number is 1-866-491-8683. Gorham voters that would like to preview and practice the system will be asked to enter a ballot access ID number, this number is 494111 for Ward 1, Middle School on Weeks Road; 494211 for Ward 2, Shaw Gym at the Municipal Center, 75 South Street. Ballot access ID numbers vary from town to town so a voter of another town will need to get their town's access ID number to practice their own ballot in the system. You can call the preview and practice number as often as you like.
If you would like to use the Accessible Voting System on Election Day, just let the check in clerk at the polling place know when you arrive and are giving your name.
If you have any questions, please call the Gorham Town Clerk's office at 222-1670.
